After having nine of his own teeth pulled just minutes before, CARLOS JOHNSON, 51, holds the hands of his wife SHEILA JOHNSON, 50, both of St. Charles, Va., as she has 16 of her teeth pulled out by dentist Dr. Mike Miller at the Remote Area Medical clinic at Wise County Fairgrounds, July 20, 2013. Hundreds of people travel for hundreds of miles and sleep in parking lots for days for the chance to get free dental and medical care from this group of volunteer dentists and doctors, some of whom are the best in the world. Some people have come from as far away as Michigan. The Remote Area Medical Volunteer Corps is a non-profit, volunteer, airborne relief corps dedicated to serving mankind by providing free health care, dental care, eye care, veterinary services, and technical and educational assistance to people in remote areas of the United States and the world. The Remote Area Medical was founded in 1985 by Stan Brock, and is a publicly supported all-volunteer charitable organization. The doctors, dentists and support workers take part in these clinics at their own expense. (Photo Rod Lamkey Jr.)
